Congratulations to Dan Connors
Dan Connors received the honor of being awarded Volunteer of the Year by the Georgia Citizen Corps—an organization that recognizes members of programs who have demonstrated extraordinary achievements. After joining CERT in August 2004, Dan Connors’ positive attitude, willingness to participate and tremendous effort has lead him to receive this prestigious award.Connors currently serves as the district three leader in east Cobb County and meets with members a minimum of six times each year to discuss safety plans and identify vulnerabilities and potential risks throughout his district. This district has the largest membership in the county and is actively involved in CERT on a regular basis. Under his direction, CERT members have learned essential skills to protect their communities. Connors helped organize the CERT rally in September, which allowed volunteers to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and Connors’ team came in first place. His enthusiasm is contagious and his commitment has significantly enhanced the progression of the CERT program. His determination, reliability and leadership skills are commendable and we believe he will continue to help the community for years to come. Congratulations are due to Connors on his recent accomplishment. > Find out more about Cobb's CERT program Department of Transportation (DOT) Project Update Dirt will be moving this spring as DOT is ready to start construction on several significant projects in the district three area; namely Canton Road, Childers Road and Jamerson Road. Below are some details of the improvements you can expect for each project. Canton Road Improvements along Canton Road will occur in a 1.4 miles stretch between Hamby Drive/Rosedale Drive to just north of Blackwell Road/New Chastain Road. A raised concrete median will be installed from the beginning of the project to just north of Piedmont Road and from Worley Drive to the end of the project. Installation of this median will significantly reduce the high accident rates within the corridor in both number and severity. Major intersection improvements will also be done at Piedmont Road and Blackwell/Road/New Chastain Road. A red brick patterned asphalt flush median will be added at locations between the raised medians and several sidewalk gaps will be filled-in within the project limits. The notice to proceed should be issued in early March and0, it is expected to take nine months with construction completed by December. Childers Road Childers Road improvements will extend 1.1 miles from Shallowford Road to the Fulton County line and will include the addition of sidewalk on the northwest side of the roadway as well as along a short section on the southeast side from the shopping center to the first subdivision. Childers Road will be widened and horizontal and vertical alignments will be improved. A roadway closure will be required this summer to make a hillcut near Ellenwood Park Drive. Information regarding this closure and the available detour route will be posted on the Cobb DOT Web site at www.cobbdot.org. The notice to proceed on construction was recently issued and the project is scheduled for completion by the beginning of December. Jamerson Road The focus of the Jamerson Road project consists of widening Jamerson Road from a two-lane to a four-lane divided roadway between Canton Road and Lee Waters Road. Between Lee Waters Road and Sandy Plains Road, the four-lane roadway will transition to a three-lane roadway with right turn and left turn lanes added at some of the intersections to improve safety and decrease congestion. In addition, improvements will be made around Kell High School which will include the extension of turn lanes along Lee Waters Road. The project is expected to begin this spring and will be completed by March 2012. April 1 Deadline to appeal property valuation Property Owners have until April 1 to file a return with the tax assessors office to request a review of their value for 2010. A form (Taxpayer's Return of Real Property) is available on the tax assessors' Web site at www.cobbassessor.org. If you decide to file this form, be sure to state your opinion of value as of January 1, 2010. If the assessors disagree with your returned value, you will be sent a Notice and will have 45 days to file an appeal if you disagree with the assessors' proposed value.
